Showcase your business or event with a memorable sign.

Design

Consultation is completely free. This involves us having a chat about the products you sell and the story behind your business. It’s also to get an understanding of the look you’d like to achieve and the sort of customers you have or would like to have.

A few things to consider when deciding on a design..

Readability

It’s important that your signs are clear and easy to read. People may need to manoeuvre around your menu or signs from a distance and in crowded places, often whilst walking.

Psychology

Did you know that certain colours can evoke your appetite? That people look at certain places on a menu or sign before others? That little details like where and how you show the price can affect how quickly someone will make a decision on what to order?

Language

Using evocative language to describe your product will make it much more appealing. Words that describe an origin such as ‘Devonshire Crab’ or ‘Cornish Cream’ add a romance to of the product and displaying the names of local suppliers also will also add interest. People like to hear a story.

Design work is charged at £25 an hour, the first hour is refunded if the order goes ahead and this covers basic layout. If you have a budget in mind, I can work within the budget set. I am also happy to paint designs or logos supplied by you.

Materials

There are many types of signs, so the first thing to do is decide on what you need.

I will normally paint on FSC certified Birch Plywood unless otherwise requested. I also can supply Dibond (a lightweight aluminium board which is up cycled from the construction industry) and glass. I am also happy to paint on to boards or other materials supplied by you. I use water-based emulsion paint, professional scenic paints, genuine 23.5ct gold leaf and high quality lettering enamels. Dimensions are completely up to you but I can offer advice on this if you’re not sure.

I also paint on location if your wall or board is stationary on site.

Main Signs

Normally mounted on the front of your shop or stall. This is the main sign to display your name and possibly advertise the products you sell. This should tie in with the overall brand or look of your business. If you don’t have a logo or brand established yet then we can discuss this too.

Pricing will depend on the size of the board, number of colours and level of detail in the design.

A-Boards

Stand alone signs that can be placed outside your business. They can include directional signage or daily specials. Great for catching the eye of passers by. Boards are varnished and 100% waterproof and weather resistant.

Pricing will depend on whether you need me to build the A-board from scratch, dimensions, any special additions such as 3D shapes and borders, the amount of text and level of decorative detail.

Menus

Menus can be as simple as a blackboard with basic lettering in chalk pen (ideal if your menu changes regularly) or can be more decorative and painted with long lasting, weather resistant lettering enamels.

Pricing for menus will be based on the amount of text required so I will need to see your full menu before I’m able to quote.

Specials

If you want to change parts of your sign or menu regularly, there are many ways to design your sign to accomodate this. This can simply be a black board that can be written on daily, or it could be smaller separate boards that can be mounted on to your board or shopfront in a number of ways.

Pricing will depend on the level of decorative detail wanted on the main display board, how many smaller signs you require and the amount of text to be painted.

Gilded Signs

I offer traditional water gilding and oil-based gilding.

Water gilding on glass is often seen on shop front windows or for a house number in the glass pane above the door. It can also be applied to framed glass panels for a special gift.

Oil based gilding is generally used for honours boards, peal boards and other decorative features painted on to wood or glass. When applied to glass it has more of a matt finish compared to water gilding.

I use 23.5ct genuine gold leaf unless otherwise specified.

Cut-Outs

Signs can be cut to any shape you want. This is great for making directional signs, mounted to a sign post or to make your letters or images standout from the rest of the board or display.

Pricing will depend on number of colours, the intricacy of the shape, whether the signs are one or two sided, and how big they are.

Festoon Signs

These are 3D letters, mounted on to a self contained board with outdoor grade LED festoon lighting within. These are weatherproof and designed to attach on to your stall or shopfront. The sign will normally be fitted with a 3-amp plug. Additional LED light strips can be added and these work well combined with cut-outs.

Pricing will depend on the colours used, size and style of letters and the quantity of letters. These signs are 100% custom handmade to order.

Add a Scenic Touch

Whether it’s as simple as distressing, or you want to make your sign stand out from the crowd at a busy event, there are many scenic painting techniques that can be applied to your signage. These finishes can help strengthen your brand or give it more of a story, creating a more memorable connection between the viewer and your business.
