The Making of… The Kings Head pub sign
The best pubs, in my humble opinion, are the ones where as you enter, you feel as though you are stepping back in time. The Kings Head is steeped in history and quirky features. It is the only pub in Bristol that is recognised as being of national importance in Camra’s Pub Heritage Listed Interiors.
Why is everything so cute in Japan?
Gudetama is a melancholy egg whose mood changes depending on how it’s been cooked. It’s lethargic character seems to perfectly sum up my feelings on a regular basis, which I find comforting.
The Making of.. a Butcher Sign
I started this project with the desire to create an aged traditional shop sign, made with tiles. First I needed to find a good reference image to work from, which is where I stumbled across Galkoff’s Butcher Shop, a well loved Kosher Butcher in the heart of Liverpool.
What’s your Soul Food?
This project combined my two passions; Art and Cooking, which are often kept quite separate (did you know I have a secret second life as a Vegan Cafe Owner?!). The Greenway was a community project, sharing recipes by local residents which were incorporated into murals and signage at 3 public spaces within St Pauls, Bristol.
Hidden Objects in Film - Exploring the work of Annie Atkins
As a Sign Writer myself, I was delighted to hear that we still use traditional Sign Writers and Calligraphers in film. Annie explains in her recent book that when designing for a world where things would have been made by hand, they should be produced by hand in film too.
Process Shots from a Weathered Ticket Sign
This was a quick project I did to try out some ageing techniques. I used a scrap piece of wood I’d had in the studio from an old project and made a simple design I wouldn’t be too precious about.
The making of.. The Cobbler Scenic Sign
I set myself the challenge to create an Eighteenth-century American Cobbler trade sign. I wanted to explore the story behind the sign and put some of the skills I’d learnt at the Scenic Painters course to use. I find the process fascinating and here I will share some of it with you!
Trade Signs
Pre-twentieth century trade signs have a magical quality to them. The form and shape would often display the meaning of the sign itself, with no words required.
