One was a light green and the other a darker emerald colour. I marked out the tiles using 5mm masking tape, carefully looking at the original tile pattern as reference. I wanted to focus on the bottom right corner of the facade, where the Butcher sign was. The tiles were looking lovely and shiny at this stage, but I wanted to display the sign as it would have looked later on in life. So I took to the text with some sandpaper, to create the scratches described by the conservationists. This helped create depth to the tiles, with dark and light variations showing through in the brushstrokes. trips to visit new cultures and landscapes is an important part of my life. I’ve volunteered my time to planting trees, teaching English in schools, building a bamboo house, painting murals and working on a farm. My main passion in this project was creating a beautiful and memorable space that people could get lost in, a home away from home. My passion for food and cooking helped us develop recipes. I take inspiration from food I’ve tried whilst travelling, whilst using local and season UK ingredients. Almost all of the signs, decor and furniture was handpainted by myself, first in my friend's kitchens and later in my studio when I could afford one. Lino-cut, Acid-Etching and Screen-printing took me away from Photoshop and into the world of the hand-made.
